Midnightstar poked her head out of her den, gazing slowly around the camp before deciding to slip out. The sun had set some time ago and the cats of ThunderClan were in their dens- which meant in Midnightstar's mind at that time that they were all asleep... Well, that's what she hoped for, anyway. For the most part.
There was a certain tom within her Clan who she usually didn't mind having around too much. That was Scorchclaw. Midnightstar had never really taken the time to get to know him well enough to call him a friend but maybe it was time to change that. The leader didn't have many friends and there were few whose advice she could count on in her Clan.
Midnightstar turned from the camp entrance, where she'd ended up, and bounded over to the warriors' den, slipped quietly inside, and gently poked Scorchclaw's flank with her left front paw. "Want to go hunting?" The she-cat asked in a low voice, hoping to not disturb the other warriors.

Scorchclaw lay curled in his nest flank rising and falling rhythmically. However, his paws and whiskers twitched in the obvious signs of a bad dream. In his mind, he was being carried away by a fast, muddy river. Water was filling his lungs, and he tried to cry out for help to no avail. His body banged from rock to rock and when he glanced towards the bank, he saw his sister, Sparrowpaw, staring out at him blankly.
Needless to say, he was relieved when Midnightstar interrupted his sleep. He blinked at her sleepily for a moment as he was pushed back into reality. "Sure," He finally mewed, rising to his feet. He gave himself a good shake and licked at a couple of wild tufts of fur. "Couldn't sleep?" He didn't know her well, but he was glad for her company none-the-less. She was certainly a good leader, strong and intelligent, and the few times he had talked to her had been pleasant.

Midnightstar nodded, "Yeah.. That and I'm more of a night hunter than a day hunter, really." She meowed. The leader flicked her tail authoritavely- although that embarrassed her as it wasn't a technical 'patrol'- and padded out of the warriors' den.
As she padded through the clearing, Midnightstar realized how bright it was. The moon was rising and it was getting wider. A Gathering will be held soon.. The first one since I've become leader. This is going to be annoying and great... All of those cats staring at me and yet... Yet I enjoy- and fear- having the control I do over the cats of my Clan. My decisions are final and affect them all in some way, shape, or form. Midnightstar shook her head, Mouse-brain! Don't be losing yourself in thought when you're going to go hunting with a Clanmate! The leader turned to look at her companion, "Where do you want to go hunting?"

Scorchclaw padded after his leader, still a bit sleepy on his paws. He gave his head a shake to clear it and opened his mouth to say something to her but stopped. Midnightstar was obviously lost in her own thoughts, and he didn't want to be the one to interrupt her. It could be important clan business for all he knew so he left her on her own.
When she finally seemed to shake herself out of it and talk with him, he paused thoughtfully. "How about close to the Great Sycamore?" he asked, whiskers twitching.

Midnightstar shrugged, "Sounds good to me." The leader yawned and twitched an ear, feeling embarrassed once again. What is it with me tonight? I'm getting embarrassed at almost everything I do! Midnightstar thought, frustrated with herself. Trying to make conversation, the she-cat commented, "Greenleaf is coming soon.. It's my favorite season." Midnightstar hoped it wasn't dumb to say and she shut her jaws before she asked 'what's your favorite season?'.

Scorchclaw watched the black she-cat curiously, feeling his eyes drawn to her. She was rather pretty and certainly unique. And he was thrilled that she was carrying on conversation with him, since he half expected it to be a fairly quiet, if not awkward, hunt. "Mine too. Not too hot or too cold, plenty of prey, and new life," He mewed, stretching.

Midnightstar nodded in agreement, "The mice are plentiful then. I love mice as prey. I'll never understand RiverClan and their fish or ShadowClan and their frogs, though.." The leader shrugged at the last sentence, "Every cat has their own taste in prey, I suppose."

"Very true. Personally, I love rabbits," Scorchclaw mewed, freezing as a scuffling at the base of a tree caught his attention. Carefully, he began creeping to where the the squirrel was standing, completely focused. Just as he almost got close enough, the soft breeze changed directions. He tried to jump on the creatures but his paws met empty air, and his prey was gone.

"Rabbits are fun to hunt because I'm a fast runner.. They're the easiest for me to catch, considering I'm not a very good hunter." Midnightstar meowed. Not another peep came from the leader as she caught sight of the squirrel. The leader watched in nervousness as Scorchclaw went for the prey. She cringed as the breeze changed direction and the tom lost the prey. "Better luck next time." Midnightstar meowed, trying to be comforting.

"Neither am I, obviously," Scorchclaw mewed, tail tip twitching as he cast an annoyed glance at the try. He shrugged it off casually though after a moment. "Yeah, I hate squirrels," he mewed. He was grateful for all prey, but squirrels had to be his least favorite. SkyClan could have them.

"Our skills balance out our weaknesses and in the event that they don't, what matters in the end is that we try for our Clan." Midnightstar meowed meaningfully, feeling slightly dumb afterwards. You sound like a babbling- yet wise- elder even though you've only seen each season twice! She scolded herself, although admittedly it was quite wise and well-put... At least, that's what Midnightstar hoped Scorchclaw would think. Since when have I ever cared about what other cats think, though?

Scorchclaw paused to looks at the black she-cat, eyes filled with respect and admiration. "Wise words," he murmured, dipping his head, impressed. It was safe to say that there was no other she-cat like Midnightstar, and he felt a pang of something he couldn't quite name in his chest. "No wonder you're such a great leader with thoughts like that."
